Virginia Department of Emergency Weather Plan

Moving in bad weather can be a problem. To minimize this bump in the road, when you’re planning to move, pay attention to the weather reports in the weeks and days leading up to your move. Discuss inclement moving weather policies with your moving company or if your doing a self-move, have a personal inclement weather plan.

According to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management:

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell announced today a way for Virginians to become “mobile ready” for disasters. The Ready Virginia mobile app, developed by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, gives Virginians a new way to prepare for disasters and also to stay informed during emergencies with the latest information.

The free Ready Virginia app for iPhone® and Android™ mobile devices provides emergency planning and preparedness guidance along with several other important features, including:

Location- specific weather watches and warnings as well as flood information issued by the National Weather Service
Disaster news from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management
Maps with open American Red Cross shelters, hurricane evacuation routes, hurricane storm surge zones and stream gauges
A template for creating a customized family emergency plan that can be easily shared
Local emergency manager contact information
Links to register for local emergency alerts
“Mobile phones and tablets quickly have become a primary way for people to stay informed during disasters. Last year, social media and web-based information were critical to informing the public and keeping individuals updated with important information during the severe derecho wind storm and Hurricane Sandy,” said Governor McDonnell. “The new Ready Virginia mobile app gives people another way to stay informed and quickly identify services and other valuable resources regardless of their location.

The Ready Virginia app is available for download in the App Store SM and in Google Play™ for Android™.

In addition to the mobile app, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management launched a mobile version of its website at m.vaemergency.gov. The mobile site contains all the information available on VDEM’s regular website, but with easier navigation for those who use smart phones and tablets to access websites.

“This new app is one of the most important ones Virginians can install on their mobile devices. Now our citizens can get ‘mobile ready’ and ensure that their families are prepared for emergencies and stay informed with official disaster information when an emergency occurs,” said Governor McDonnell.

Things To Do In Hampton Roads

When we move, everything is new and we have an opportunity to paint on a blank canvas. With a the daunting list new things you have to navigate such as how to get around, what schools to get the kids into, the child setting to pick, ect. it’s important to take time to wind down and have fun! Here are a few of our suggestions to get out, relax and get to know your new community:

• Eat at any place with a view. Smell the ocean, sit on a deck and feel the sun on your face or have a picnic in one of our beautiful parks. A great suggestion is Tautog’s located at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Try the crab dip, it’s wonderful. In Norfolk, eat at the Get Fresh Cafe, located in the back of the Five Points Farmer’s Market. The Meatloaf was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives! While you’re there, try some of our local produce, take one of their workshops (they offer a great Rain Barrel workshop) or go to a special event.

tautogs

• Take a picture with a Norfolk mermaid, Norfolk’s public mascot program was launched in 2002 and designed to showcase area artists talent and causes. A Mermaid hunt is great fun on a rainy, dreary day.

• Walk around in Olde Towne Portsmouth; don’t miss the famous Ghost Walk!

• Have a play day at the Zoo in Norfolk, Fun Forrest in Chesapeake, the Children’s Museum in Portsmouth, the Aquarium in Virginia Beach or visit the birthplace of Mr. Peanut the Planters Peanut Mascot, in Suffolk.

• Eat at a real old fashioned car-hop restaurant – Doumar’s in Norfolk. The Doumar family may have invented the ice cream cone. The ice cream is worth every single penny and the Limeade is out of this world. You can watch them make waffle cones on the original machine that was used at the Jamestown Exposition in 1907.

• Have a day in the sun at one of our beautiful beaches, Don’t forget the sunscreen, a fun day will be ruined if you get a bad burn.

• Take the Elizabeth River Ferry; the ferry runs between Norfolk and Portsmouth. Remember to look at the schedules. A ferry ride is especially nice on a warm summer evening!

• Enjoy one of our many festivals (be sure to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on) or go to a free concert at the Oceanfront or at Town Point Park in Norfolk which is mainly on Saturdays, or watch a movie on Family Night in Ocean View Beach, or at the Oceanfront.

• Kayak or Paddleboard in the ocean or one of our many rivers.

• Enjoy Busch Gardens, try the latest and greatest Busch Gardens Roller Coaster. Even if Roller Coasters scare you, you will enjoy this one!

• Take a photo of the sunset at the Beach. The less crowded beaches are located at the Southern end and Northern end of Virginia Beach, Ocean View or through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel to Hampton.

• Take a bike, hike or camp at First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach; bring Fido along, he’ll have a great time!

• Fish or go crabbing from the from Ocean View pier. The pier was re-built after being destroyed by Hurricane Isabel and at 1690 feet-North America’s longest free standing fishing pier. The Ocean Vie Fishing pier has a restaurant, bait & tackle shop and 100 passenger recreational fishing headboat w/ catering on the Chesapeake Bay.

• Stop in at Norfolk’s Nauticus for an interesting and interactive navel experience and tour the Battleship Wisconsin. The Wisconsin was the last Battleship made in the US.

• Wade away from a jellyfish – quickly, the warmer the water the more the jellyfish will hunt you down

• Eat at Luna Maya in Norfolk. It’s not Mexican; it’s Bolivian, the guacamole is a winner and everything is made from scratch.

• Visit the old lighthouse at Cape Henry, it’s the site of the British landing in the New World in 1607.

• Go to Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach. Fly a kite, walk around the track or roll down the hill, adults and kids alike will have a blast!

• Splurge and have a fried Twinkie at a Tides game. Watch out for their mascot Riptide, he might sit on you like he did our friend Janet! Check it out on a night when you can get free items or nights when you can get hot dogs, popcorn, and drinks for 50 cents. Keep an eye out for a group coupon and you’ll get a good deal on the ticket price.

I’ll feature more fun, historical and cultural things to do in Hampton Roads in later posts, so stay tuned!
